Were You Injured During An Uber Or Lyft Ride?

Ride-sharing has exploded in the last few years. While taxis used to be a popular way to get around in a new city, now people are just as likely to use an app on their phone, tap in a request and get a ride from Uber, Lyft or another ride-sharing service. Just like other cars, these vehicles sometimes crash. However, because of the legal classification of ride-sharing drivers, the insurance covering the injury claims is not always straightforward.

If you have been injured in a ride-share accident, you need a legal team on your side to sort through the insurance complexities as well as the problems associated with your injuries. That is where we come in. At Wells Law Group, P.A., we will make sure you are taken care of. Red tape should not come between you and the compensation you need to move forward. If you are in Tampa or the West Central Florida area, get in touch. We would love to help.

Who Is Responsible When An Uber Crashes?

After a car accident involving an Uber or Lyft, one could reasonably assume that the company is responsible. After all, their drivers are covered by generous corporate insurance policies.

However, Uber and Lyft drivers are not employees of those companies – they are independent contractors. Because of that, different levels of insurance apply in different circumstances. Important considerations include:

  • Were you a passenger in the ride-sharing vehicle at the time of the accident?
  • If not, was the driver transporting a paying customer?
  • Was the driver on their way to pick up a paying customer, or were they simply waiting for the next fare?
  • Was the driver in violation of company guidelines? Under the influence of a substance?
  • What does the driver’s personal insurance policy cover?

Whenever multiple insurance policies overlap, insurance companies will often try to shift blame onto each other to avoid paying as much money as they possibly can. Our job is the opposite. We want to be sure you get the money you need to recover as fully as possible. We can push back against their lawyers and make sure that responsible parties do not ignore their obligations.
